Myth #3
Collage is difficult.
design by Danelle Johnson
I’ve been a bit timid about trying to collage. But since figuring out a formula based on simple layering techniques, I feel more confident in my abilities. Here are a few basic guidelines to keep in mind:
Select a theme. Most collage pieces have a theme, whether it’s a consistent color, a repeated texture, or an emotion such as love. Because most of our scrapbook layouts are created for a specific reason, this step is easy. Defining that theme and referring back to it often will help you create a cohesive layout once you finish layering.
Start with a blank surface. This doesn’t have to be a piece of paper or mat board. You can use a photo as your surface, a book (and make an altered book out of it), a picture frame, a decorative tray, and so on. Almost anything can serve as the starting ground for your collage art.
Integrate texture. As previously mentioned, you don't have to use paper when constructing a collage-style layout; it just comes naturally to us because it's such a core ingredient of our craft. When using paper, try to mix in some other textures and materials as well.
