What To Collage

What to Collage
design by Christine Brown

Collage designs often showcase personal trinkets—sentimental items the artist just doesn’t have the heart to throw away. As scrapbookers, we naturally use items with meaning on our layouts — photos! But explore other ways in which you might bring personal pieces into your work. Here are a few suggestions:

Consider using your own handwriting for a personal touch on your layouts. You don’t have to journal an entire page by hand, but try adding a few words here and there. If you have personal notes from family members written in their hand, utilize them in the background of your layout or on a tag. Consider color-copying sections of a diary or journal entry to use on your page.

Souvenirs and memorabilia add an individual touch to any design. My dad loves to fish, but I’d have a very unappealing scrapbook if I added an actual fish to his layout! However, I can incorporate memorabilia (such as his fishing license) to symbolize his love of fishing. Along those same lines, my mom loves to sew. While I can’t fit a sewing machine on her scrapbook page, I could add a dress pattern to the background or stitch around the edges of her photo to represent her hobby.

What’s the bottom line when it comes to creating beautiful collage layouts? Anything goes—within reason. Layering can make assembling a collage layout easier, but you should still remember to keep your layers in check. You don’t want to end up with a layout that won’t fit into an album!
