Smart Thinking
While dyeing is not an exact science, keep these pointers in mind to make the process easier.
Pick Paper-Safe Dyes: Look for dyes made for scrapbooking to avoid acidity issues. (See page 00 for a list of companies that make safe dyes.)
Cover Your Work Surface: Dye on several sheets of old newspapers or an old towel to protect your work surface. Keep paper towels handy to blot up excess dye and to clean up any spills.
Use Proper Containers: Dye items in containers that are larger than the item for nearly mess-free and uniform results.
Protect Your Hands: Wear rubber gloves or use tweezers to remove items from dye baths.
Experiment First: Test colors on lots of materials. Each will accept dye a bit differently, and results will vary depending on the dye strength, how long you leave it immersed, and whether it was damp to start with.
Document: Keep track of dye mixtures, times, and techniques to re-create them later.
Think About Storage: Keep powdered dyes in a dry place and liquids upright. Store both kinds out of direct sunlight. Bottle mixed dyes in sealable containers that have a spout or sprayer so they’re easy to use the next time.
